Where Did The Tradition Of Christmas Presents Start? In pre-Christian Rome, the emperors required their most despised citizens to bring offerings and gifts to them during the Saturnalia celebrations that happened in December, and Kalends celebrations that happened in January. Later, this ritual expanded to include gift-giving among all the people. As Christianity eventually become more popular, the Catholic Church borrowed this gift-giving custom and gave it a Christian flavor by re-rooting it in the folklore the kindness of Saint Nicholas who would bring gifts to the children in his neighborhood. |
